How to Perform Crack Treatment Using Asphalt Sealant: A Step-by-Step Guide

The grooving and sealing method is the industry-standard solution for repairing small to medium cracks. This process utilizes specialized equipment—a routing machine and a sealant applicator—along with modified asphalt polymer sealant designed for crack repair. Optimal groove dimensions should be at least 1 cm wide and 1–3 cm deep, with a depth-to-width ratio not exceeding 2:1 (lower ratios preferred). Below is the 5-step workflow for effective crack sealing:

1. Preparation

Inspect routing machines and sealant applicators to ensure proper functionality.

Design a repair plan based on crack characteristics.

Heat sealant in the applicator to 193–204°C (minimum 193°C, never exceeding 204°C).

Transport equipment (sealant applicator, routing machine, blowers, safety signs) to the site.

Close half of one traffic lane as the work zone.

2. Grooving

Adjust the routing machine to achieve the pre-designed groove dimensions.

Dynamically modify groove width/depth based on crack severity while meeting minimum specifications.

3. Cleaning

Use backpack blowers to remove debris from the groove and adjacent areas (minimum 10 cm clearance on both sides).

4. Sealing

For temperatures <4°C: Preheat the groove to enhance sealant adhesion.

For temperatures ≥4°C: Direct application without preheating (preheating still recommended for optimal results).

At 193°C, evenly inject heated sealant into the groove using a squeegee-equipped nozzle, creating a uniform sealing layer on both sides.

5. Curing

Allow the sealant to cool completely (approx. 15 minutes, adjust based on ambient temperature).

Clear residual debris before reopening traffic.
